Romans are people from Rome. Rome is the capital (the main city) of the country of Italy, located on the north coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

During the time when Jesus Christ was living on earth, the Romans ruled the known world of that time. They were known for being ferocious with the people they ruled over, and the Jews in Israel hated having them rule over their country. At the time of Jesus' crucifixion, one of his trials was before the Roman governor Pilate, who had to give authorization for him to be crucified. He was mocked and beaten and crucified by Roman soldiers. Roman guards were at his tomb. When the New Testament refers to a centurion or official, these would have been Roman military officers.
