Artemis is another name for Diana, who was one of the gods worshiped by people in Asia Minor. She was considered to be the goddess of life, but of course she was a false god, a demon.

The center of the worship of Artemis was Ephesus. Once when the apostle Paul was in Ephesus, the men who made little shrines from silver for the worship of Artemis caused a riot, led by a man named Demetrius. They could see that if people believed in Jesus Christ like Paul preached, they would stop worshiping Artemis, and then they wouldn't buy the shrines any more. Acts 19
